The Friend by Teresa Driscoll: A Review
"Learning - in the face of evil and in the name of love - what you are capable of yourself. "
-The Friend
*******SPOILER ALERT********

A great ending to a not-so-great thriller.
'The Friend' by Teresa Driscoll does not fail to provide you with suspense. However, it does not quite hold the suspense that effectively.
The story begins with a worried mother who left her child alone with a woman she trusted completely but a turn of events shows that her decision was wrong on many levels.
The plot is exceptionally good as is the storyline. But the writing style isn't very appealing.
A lot of events have been described with immense details which weren't needed and weren't associated with the story either.
For example: the detailed information about the lives of Matthew, the detective and Melanie, the investigator are quite irrelevant, the detailed relationship between Sophie and Mark is overdone as is the relationship between Sophie and Emma.
There's way too many flashbacks to keep up with the present time. The initial part of the story is very slow, and may even appear to be boring.
The real action begins from chapter 32, when everyone gets to see the real side of Emma. I'd like to add here that the chapters written from Emma's point of view reduce the suspense. A few intellectuals may even guess the ending from it.
Though the actual ending is quite impossible to guess, but the flow of events can be very clearly made out without being told.
I'd give this book a 3.5 stars out of 5.
In conclusion, I'll say that the book does leave an impression on the reader with it's completely unpredictable ending though for readers who like fast paced books, the initial part would be boring. But I'd still recommend the book to a thriller-lover.
Nice and very helpful review
